Investigating Oxidation, a Painting by Andy Warhol
Art and science may seem like worlds apart, but when it comes to preserving the legacy of a cultural icon like Andy Warhol, they come together in a fascinating symbiosis. One of Warhol's famous works, Oxidation (1978), recently became the focus of an in-depth scientific investigation after fluctuations in the climate of its gallery triggered a chemical reaction that changed its appearance.

Innovative Research Studies Long-Term PCE Exposure in Martinsville, Indiana: A Community-Centric Approach
A university research coalition (Purdue, U of Illinois Chicago, and Indiana University) is studying the health effects of long-term PCE exposure on residents of Martinsville, Indiana, where dry-cleaning chemicals have contaminated groundwater and migrated into building air. RJLG's PTR-MS mobile laboratory is central to the effort, conducting breath sample analysis and indoor air quality monitoring on-site rather than shipping samples to a distant lab. The post highlights both the technical capability of the mobile lab and the community-engagement model used by the research team.

Airport Solves PFAS Dilemma when Resurfacing Concrete
A small private regional airport in the Pacific Northwest needed to resurface a runway but couldn't find landfills or recyclers willing to accept the milled concrete due to PFAS concerns, specifically the AFFF fire-suppression foam commonly used at airports. Since this airport had no documented AFFF use, they needed to prove their concrete was clean. RJLG's dual expertise in petrographic analysis and LC-MS/MS chemical testing made it uniquely positioned to handle the problem. Testing confirmed no PFAS were present, allowing the concrete to go directly to a standard landfill and saving the airport money and keeping PFAS out of the environment.
